Beyond the Vessel presents an exhibition of works by František Vízner, one of the defining figures of twentieth-century Czech studio glass. Over more than three decades, Vízner devoted himself to a single form — the bowl — treating it not as a functional object but as a vehicle for exploring the relationship between material, light and form. This exhibition brings together more than 20 sculptural bowls made from the late 1980s onward, tracing the quiet, obsessive refinement that defined his practice.

Rather than shaping glass through blowing, Vízner worked in solitude, cutting his forms from solid blocks of glass — a slow, subtractive process closer to stone carving than traditional glassmaking. This method allowed him to achieve a purity of line and an extraordinary sensitivity to how light moves through mass, giving his bowls a sculptural presence closer to minimalist art than decorative craft.

At the heart of the exhibition is Bowl with Point, Vízner’s most celebrated form. Conceived in the early 1970s as a design intended for industrial mass production, it was ultimately hand-cut by the artist himself in 1971 from smoky soda-potash glass. Though never mass-produced, the form became a lifelong touchstone, and the exhibition presents three later versions — from 1998, 2007 and 2009 — that reveal how Vízner continued to refine its proportions, colour and optical depth over the following decades.

The exhibition also highlights Vízner’s evolving relationship with colour. Works such as Bowl Dark Red (2007) and Bowl Oval Pink (2008), alongside pieces in iridescent blues, greens, oranges and purples, showcase his use of specialist lead-based glass sourced from Czech factories, achieving depths of colour rarely seen in cut glass. In the final decade of his career, this interest shifted toward opacity, as Vízner began exploring solid, matte surfaces that offered a new, more restrained engagement with form.
