Dear Lihua

Qiuqiu is dead. Unfortunately, death still comes with paperwork. Dear Lihua is a new bilingual (English/Mandarin) experimental theatre piece presented by Treetrick, a UK-China-based theatre collective.

Description

After arriving in a strange “English-speaking heaven,” Qiuqiu discovers that if she wants to return to China, she must earn enough points to leave. She is assigned to work in the Department of Unanswered Letters, sorting through mountains of mail that never received a reply. One day, she notices something
strange: countless letters addressed to someone named “Lihua.” No one seems to know who Lihua is, and no one has ever written back.

Part immigration office, part fever dream, Dear Lihua moves between dark comedy, absurd bureaucracy, and moments of unexpected tenderness. Blending Mandarin and English, the show explores migration,
loneliness, language, and the exhausting feeling of constantly having to translate yourself just to be understood. At its heart, it asks a simple question: what slowly disappears when a person spends too long trying to become legible to others?
